December daily {2nd}: visiting Mr. Claus

We had to take Grayson to see Dr. Lee today for his pre-op appointment, so Beckham got to be loved on at Grami's and the newlyweds-T&T-went with us to Boise.  The appointment went well and although Gray has a lot of anxiety about the upcoming surgery (it's Monday morning), we've been super up front with him and I think he'll do just great.  He is not the kind of kid that you spring stuff on, so we're very careful to talk things out with him and make sure he knows his opinion is always appreciated-whether or not it changes the facts.  Anyway, he was a shining star at the eye doctor's and loved having Uncle Talon & Aunt Taylor with him.  He adores them both & I kinda think the feeling is mutual.  After Dr. Lee's, we headed over to the mall so T&T could exchange something.  We waited in the car.  Until we got a text that said the following:

"You shoulda brought Grayson in to see Santa."

I asked our timid & must-be-warned-well-in-advance-about-things-like-this child if he'd like to see Santa.  He-as we knew he would-said no thank you.  Then a couple minutes later he said, "Yeah, I want to."  So we zipped out of the car and into the mall.  I was holding his hand and as we got closer he asked me to hold him which I gladly did.  I've found with him it's best to let him really feel whatever he's feeling and to validate rather than try to change him.  Guess what?  It works so much better than getting upset because he's not acting just how I'd wish he would.
We got in line and soon it was our turn.  Zac was going to take some pictures-with our phones because that was all we had-and I carried him over.  Santa was quite the man & it was almost as if he knew our boy because he respected his space and just said, "Can you give me five?"  Grayson did.  Then he asked, "Would you like to tell me what you want for Christmas?"  I cautiously set him on Santa's lap and slowly moved toward Zac and he totally didn't care!  He just smiled and said, "How bout a tractor?" We all laughed & he was totally fine at that point.  He told Santa how much he loves Toy Story 3 and made Santa laugh out loud at a couple things he said.  He smiled for pictures & even kinda posed for one like the one from two years ago that hangs in our living room this time of year.  All in all, it was a successful & spur of the moment Santa visit and he kept asking to go back throughout the day, so I was pretty proud of him for overcoming one of his fears.

Ohhh I have a feeling I"m going to love this month of your blog. I loved the snow post. I can't get over how much you had. That's insane. Grayson is so cute though how he just is one of the guys. I can't believe he did so well with Santa again too. He's so sweet. We're nervous about Friday. I think Jhett will do okay but Lyndin will freak. Stranger danger is starting up a bit and Santa is definitely a stranger to her. :) I need to call you soon about coming up. We're thinking maybe as early as the 18th but only if that works with you. Talk to you soon.

I feel so behind on your blog...so sorry! I get lazy and then don't see anyone's blog...or blog myself. I feel like I say that a lot! :)

You are such a good mom! I have learned to be more like that with Layla recently and it does make a difference. You can't change them and if you try it usually back fires.

Grayson is such a good kid! So brave. Julie has no desire to go see santa. Layla might be okay this year. Hope he is doing well with the surgery and everything!

Congrats to Taylor...they are a cute couple. Taylor is gorgeous!

Love you and hope to talk with you soon!

For our kids it is better to wait and surprise them with things. They get more anxiety if we tell them in advance when they have stuff going on. Isn't it a major pat on the back when you can figure stuff like this out about your kids?

It was fun to see you guys at the mall. Grayson is a doll!

Good job, Mr. Gray!!!! Wow, it's so cool to see the side-by-side photos of him with Santa... they grow so fast. I'm definitely going to take Ella to the mall Santa this year (I think last year she would have had a heart attack - probably will this year, too, but she's old enough that I don't feel so bad!).

I have to agree with your parenting technique of just explain it ahead instead of springing on them. I really believe that these little people are well "PEOPLE." They have to develop and express their ideas and opinions too. I love the picture of him with Santa. I love that big blue chair he is sitting on. Tell Grayson we will pray that he has a great surgery and is all better for our fun visit with you guys at christmas eve!
